Presented by Carolyn Godfrey, MA, PCC
Leadership is a large topic but at its foundation—and the key to leadership success—is influencing. Typically, leaders emphasize their strength or competence in the workplace, which can alienate colleagues and direct reports. Decades of sociology and psychology research show that by first focusing on displaying warmth, then blending in demonstrations of competence, leaders will find a clearer path to influence.
When coaching leaders, it is important to first understand where they fall on the continuum of warmth and strength. There is a difference between emotional intelligence and emotional competence. Emotional intelligence is based on our chemical and dispositional makeup, however, emotional competence is learned. In order to influence we need to increase our emotional competence.
Emotional competence is a key driver for leadership success. The research is clear that to be successful at influencing others you must project both warmth and strength and manage the paradox of moving both the task and relationship together.
You can learn to increase your personal leadership when coaching and learn to support your clients to improve their personal leadership. Leadership coaching can help your clients influence others by building trust in order to empower others. The first step in influencing is to help leaders manage their emotional state and make a connection.
In this interactive presentation you will learn the first principles of influencing:
- The latest research on influence and leadership.
- The importance of emotional intelligence and building emotional competence to empower and influence others in order to transform leadership behaviors.
- How to naturally express non-verbal cues that project warmth and strength.
