Imagine a river flowing just above our heads. It's lush, and ever flowing. This is what I call The Creative Flow —the source of our imagination and creativity. We all experience moments when we are in the Creative Flow, but it can be elusive. When we are sourcing this flow, it is an incredible experience —ideas, energy, imagination, creativity are in abundance. There is no struggle —we are full of curiosity, and willingness to explore the moment RIGHT NOW without judgment to discover what is on the other side of our ideas.


A couple of weeks ago I was invited by the SF Digital Narrative Alliance (our SFBAC VP, Florian Brody, is a founding member!) to speak about improvisational training as a powerful process to learn how to access and channel creativity more consistently and build stories in team settings. We took people out of their seats and into our Improv Sandbox for 60 minutes! We witnessed total strangers creating playfully with each other, delighting in curiosity of the "what would happen if…" without judgment, hesitation, or premeditation. They committed to building upon whatever happened, building upon each other’s ideas and stayed completely present in the moment. The energy in the room was magical —and it stayed with everyone throughout the rest of the day’s activities.


This is the very space we hold for our coaching clients—whether we are coaching a C-Suite level leader, a creative, or someone working on their personal vision. It is our job to help them access this Creative Flow, to be present in the moment with what is happening without judgment so they can build  upon whatever shows up. After creating, teaching, directing, and performing in improvisational theatre for 30 years, I discovered that I wasn’t just teaching improv techniques, I was coaching individuals to not only BE in the moment but to ENJOY and CO-CREATE with others in the moment!


One thing I find we coaches are not always very good at (me too) is remembering to block out time to nurture the playful, creative side of ourselves. It is an essential element to what we bring to our clients —to stay curious, creative and flexible. During the next few months, while the world is taking their summer vacation, I encourage all of us to give ourselves time to relax, enjoy being present, and play!

What were three pivotal actions you took to move your business forward when you were starting out?

When I started out, I was building a 1:1 in-person coaching practice. It was in the early days of the internet so this did not play a role in my business building efforts. My marketing plan was really simple: go to shows; enroll 1:1 clients; repeat. However, I struggled until I defined a grounded, professional approach. I invested in a solid booth presentation and created an annual schedule of trade shows and expos I would attend.


I don't see clients in person anymore, and although I still offer 1:1 coaching my business is now primarily built around coaching groups that meet online. At this stage, my biggest shift occurred when I replaced free sample sessions with authentic sales conversations. I also discovered that it was critical to create an annual strategy with clear launch periods and vacation periods. I make sure I have two months of vacation every year in order to rest and recharge. Finally, learning about my strengths and personality type helped me to fine tune my approach, team, and even home life so I can optimize my time.    


What were key perspectives you held to build resilience?

It's not the best coaches who succeed in business: it is the coaches who are most effective at sales. Success is about whether or not your sales process produces the desired result. You have to separate yourself from the sales process, which is a challenge since you are selling a service which depends entirely on who you're being. When you do that well, you stop thinking success is about you. This is very freeing!

Our Monthly SFBAC meetings

The ICF San Francisco Bay Area Chapter meets monthly either in person or via Zoom webinar. We have secured a temporary space at the American Bookbinders Museum in San Francisco located at 355 Clementina Street. Coaching Supervision
ICF recently clarified our position on coaching supervision. The revised statement reads:

ICF recommends coaching supervision for full-time professional coach practitioners as part of their portfolio of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities designed to keep them fit for purpose. ICF does not require coaching supervision.

SFBAC’s Coach Training Video Series

Interested in coach training? Even a quick search will yield links to  myriad coaching schools and programs. SFBAC recently launched its Coach Training Video Series to provide those exploring educational options with invaluable insights and information from program founders.


SFBAC is proud and excited to announce the launch of its new Coach Training Video Series. Kicking off this valuable resource are  interviews of three coach leaders who are based locally: Karen Kimsey-House of the Coaches Training Institute (interviewed by Ricci Victorio, SFBAC President), James Flaherty of New Ventures West (interviewed by Florian Brody, SFBAC Vice- President), and Richard Strozzi-Hecker of the Strozzi Institute (interviewed by Sahar Azarabadi, SFBAC Membership Chair).
