Vice President’s Message


In a recent conversation, an accomplished leadership coach shared with me how much he was able to grow his coaching business by developing his own way of being. Ongoing education, exchanges with peers, training in business development, and participation in a peer group creates amazing value in a profession that requires immense personal engagement. Many coaches work alone or in very small groups. The field of work is highly diversified and often poorly understood by those who want coach and even more by those who need a coach,


To paraphrase Groucho Marx, why should you belong to a club that accepts you as a member? You’re a coach. Your client tells you she works out of her own individual office, often feels unsupported and disconnected. Her inner critic tells her that she’s not good enough in her job, a part of her is unsure if she’s in the right profession. Her felt sense is she feels unsupported. What would you recommend? Build a support network, connect with three individuals of your own profession, attend a seminar or class, mingle at an event.  Let’s review your progress in our next session how your felt sense to belong to a group of equals improves your self image and the way you show up client meetings.


Maintaining your membership at ICF Global and the ICF San Francisco Bay Area Chapter not only gives you a wide range of tangible membership benefits that easily cover the membership fee. The sense of belonging to a professional group is priceless. That’s what you would tell your coaching client and your inner critic that tells you that you are not worthy enough to be part of ICF. So make sure your membership is in good standing, look into ICF Certification for which the chapter offers support and talk to a coach you know to join, renew, or update your membership.

Even with the best of visions, clients can get paralyzed and derailed by saboteurs that keep them small, while pretending to keep them safe.

Susan Carlisle,  a master coach and senior faculty member of the Coaches Training Institute, will demonstrate the power of visioning as a tool to transform lives and teach us how to help deal with the blockages that appear on the client’s journey.

In this interactive session, you will strengthen your coaching capabilities by observing and then practicing using these powerful tools that will enable your clients to clarify and reach their dreams.

Our Monthly SFBAC meetings

The ICF San Francisco Bay Area Chapter meets monthly either in person or via webinar. We have secured a temporary space at the American Bookbinders Museum in San Francisco located at 355 Clementina Street. If you have access to space, please contact Sue Steinfeld at secretary@sfbayareacoaches.org. All of our webinars and presentations will qualify you to earn CCEUs for continuing education.

One of the biggest challenges that coaches face is powerfully enrolling clients.  Did you know that the average coach has only 1 client a year after they’ve graduated? If you want to have a sustainable, full practice then it’s key to master the art of client enrollment. Unfortunately, most enrollment methods taught by the Marketing Gurus don’t work well for coaches, who want to have an authentic and genuine connection with their prospects and not be too  “salesy.” Conversely, giving away free sample sessions may give the prospective client a great coaching experience but rarely leads to a powerful conversation about working together.  This presentation Getting To a Powerful  “Yes” how to enroll clients to fill your practice with ease you will learn how to:

  • Create the container to have deep learning and insight and lead your prospect down a path to work with you, simultaneously

  • Create your own template using our methodology and process for client enrollment conversations

  • Frame your enrollment conversations to create clear expectations for the experience (no bait and switch!)

  • Hold a perspective that serves your ideal outcome and serves the client

  • Handle and navigate sticky issues around money

  • Get to a clear and powerful “yes” or “no” (no more wishy washy-ness!)

  • Incorporate ICF core competencies and the experience of coaching into your enrollment conversations to create a very powerful coaching and enrollment experience.

Tara Butler, CPCC, PCC is known as “The coaches’ coach.” She has been passionately committed to helping entrepreneurs launch and grow simple, joyous, and prosperous businesses since 2000 when she founded her own consulting and coaching practice. She has helped hundreds of clients create meaningful, sustainable, thriving businesses. As a coach herself, she has witnessed many passionate coaches quit their full time job to launch their practice, only to put their dream on the shelf because they didn’t know how to build a successful practice and couldn’t do it on their own. In 2010, this inspired her to shift her own practice from Executive Coaching and Leadership/Team Training to helping coaches and “coach like” entrepreneurs create simple, elegant, prosperous coaching practices in less than a year.
