Just as Darwin’s finches adapted in beak size to more fully utilize available food, evolutionary leaps seem to require a crisis of some kind. Surely we are facing one of mammoth proportions now. The question we must address as humanity, with the clock set at five minutes to midnight, is now what? Who must we become?

—Anne Betz and Karen Kimsey-House, in their book, Integration

President’s Message

Joie Seldon, SFBAC board member, retiring Membership Director and incoming Volunteer Coordinator, recently published her thoughts about peace & compassion, and sending healing energy to the very places we fear most; to form a collective consciousness of love and peace to create change. The following is her powerful message:

I’ve been thinking about terrorism. It's like a virus that we haven't found an antidote for. Our leaders cannot stand by and do nothing. They must act. However, I strongly believe that taking a stance of hate and rage against terrorist actions will only add fuel to the flame. Energy matters – and not the kind of energy that comes out of the ground. One of the big things I help my clients work with is the power of their personal life-force energy. Time and again, when a client changes their perspective, gets in touch with their ability to create and change their behavior, others around them either change their behavior, or something shifts.

I believe terrorists are disenfranchised people with a sense of powerlessness that they try to overcome with rage and violence. It cannot be easy to be them. Can we can send them thoughts and feelings of compassion towards healing the pain that must exist inside them? Can we send whatever version of love we can muster to them? I'm going to make that my practice. The old adage, “what we resist persists” can apply here. They are filled with anger and hatred. If we hate them back, we're stuck. I'm not condoning terrorism. It's beyond horrible. I get plenty angry about it. But the war culture that we live in has got to transform if we are ever going to grow up as a species.

I believe in miracles, and I'm going to put my energy in that direction. Let’s pray for the terrorists, as well as to all those who have been so devastatingly impacted by them.

  • Joie Seldon, Executive Coach

As coaches, we have a calling and opportunity to effect change in the world. As we embark upon the holiday season and a new year, let us take the courageous stance to hold a space of peace, compassion and love! Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with us!

—Ricci Victorio, President

Supercharge your Client's Brain :The Critical Role of Integration in Human Growth and Effectiveness

— featuring Ann Betz

Everyone wants to be more effective in their lives. We long to excel as leaders, parents, spouses, entrepreneurs, creatives, partners, friends, etc. And coaching, we have seen, is powerfully impactful in helping people reach their dreams and goals to achieve greater fulfillment and more effectiveness in their lives. But what is it actually doing to the brain that creates this shift? How do we, as coaches, impact our client's brains? Join neuroscience expert Ann Betz for this fun and highly interactive session, where we'll explore the current scientific research on human effectiveness, and its implications for coaching. Through exercises and discussion, you'll:

  • Learn the fascinating role of integration in all areas of growth and effectiveness, and how coaching is uniquely positioned to generate brain and body integration;

  • Explore new language to engage even the most skeptical client in the process of coaching;

  • Practice a new coaching tool designed to help your clients create more integration and reduce stress.

As a long-time coach and trainer as well as thought leader in the arena of neuroscience, Ann has a true gift for bringing complex scientific information to life, making it entertaining and accessible while never losing the rigor and integrity. You'll come away saying both "who knew neuroscience could be so fun?" and "I can't wait to try this with my clients!"
