President’s Message

Happy, Joyful, Fulfilling and Healing New Year to you all!!

I was looking out at the wind and sun…wondering what would be most important to say, while keeping in mind our theme for next year on the Power of We (which came out of the CTI Annual Summit in April this year). What landed was a tremendous gratitude for those in our membership who have stepped up to participate on the Board this last year, and those who have joined to actively participate in 2015.  There is nothing more powerful than working with a group of people who align on a set of values to create something of meaning.

We accomplished a lot this year by participating in International Coaching Week, starting a book club, refining our live broadcasting abilities, and becoming more active in the larger western region community group, which includes ICF Chapters from Mexico all the way up to Canada.

2015 marks the 20th anniversary for ICF-Global, so they have increased their support of regional chapters to bring communities closer and to increase awareness of coaching to the broader community, especially during ICW (International Coaching Week). We intend to build on our previous efforts - Tina Ambrosini (our superlative Events Director) is already working on doing more outreach next year during the ICW from May 18th to 24th.

We continue to strengthen ties with the coaches that exist in the region, and have a wonderful membership team in-place (Joie Seldon, Donna Davis & Elisabeth von Halem) to help make that happen.

Our past-president, Keiko Hsu, is in the leadership on the Western Region Advisory Council (WRAC) where we continue to strengthen ties with other ICF-chapters in the west. Next year we’ll be sharing programs in various ways – The LA-chapter has developed a strong webinar series they will be sharing, and we have already opened up our live-broadcast Speaker programs and subsequent videos to all other chapters, as promoted by our fabulous Sales + Marketing Director, Mila Fairfax.  Crystal Kent has stepped in to work with her on these efforts.

ICF-Global supports these efforts wholeheartedly, and will be hosting an International Leadership Conference in March. Keiko, Ricci Victorio (our VP for 2015) & I  will be there to meet other chapter leaders in-person, and strengthen connections between all of us both nationally and internationally.

None of this would be communicated to you without the expertise of our IT Superhero, Tony Scopelite, and our phenomenal Communications Director, Gail Whipple. Our finances would flail without Karisma Rodriguez, under the awesome direction of our Accountant, Sara Bronson. And none would be recorded without our steadfast secretary, so thank you Janet Fjeldstad , and welcome to Maribell Gonzalez for taking over the task next year! And thank you Greg for your smiling service as past-president this year.

It’s an exciting time in the world of coaching! …so please stay in-touch, connect with us as much as possible, and join us in 2015 to embrace the Power of We. We can truly rock the world to a positive outcome in every way - It’s just a matter of energy!

“Any great and inspiring organization that ever existed set out to do something completely unrealistic.” - Simon Sinek

Resistance

With James Baraz

James Baraz will draw from his deep experience in teaching meditation and leading retreats to share the nature of resistance from a Buddhist perspective, to enhance our understanding of what gets in the way, and to support people in holding those knots with compassion while helping them connect with their strengths as well. He’ll be drawing from the "Learning to Love Ourselves" chapter in his book, “Awakening Joy.”

About James Baraz

James Baraz has been teaching meditation retreats, workshops and classes in the U.S. and abroad since 1978. He is a founding teacher of Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California, where he started numerous training programs.

He's been teaching the popular online Awakening Joy course, which has been taken by over 15,000 people since 2003. James is co-author with Shoshana Alexander of Awakening Joy, which is based on the course. He loves teaching people how they can open to true happiness not only for their own well-being but so they become agents of consciousness for the well-being of others and the planet. James has been focusing on Dharma and Climate Change in recent years and is an advisor to One Earth Sangha, a website devoted to Buddhist teachings and responses to Climate Change.

He lives with his wife in Berkeley, where he's led a meditation community since 1980. He has two sons and three grandchildren.
